Why we don't offshore Custom Software Development

Offshoring significantly increases stress and can lead to project failure

Many potential customers ask this question.  ‘Why don’t we just use cheap resources in India or China?’

Some Australian companies are doing this.  Charging local rates and then shipping the work off to low cost centres.

Not only is this ethically wrong, it does not deliver the best outcome for you as a client.

Here’s why we don’t offshore our project work:

Communication is critical

The most important aspect of software development is communication between the client and the developer.

The problem with offshoring is that communication is challenging.  This can lead to the wrong product being developed.  A product that does not emphasize your point of difference in the market.

Where possible, our developers can sit with your team to maximize communication. 

Cost savings are misleading

As outlined above, there are communication problems with low cost locations.

One way to overcome these communication problems is to have a local consultant document everything in an extreme level of detail.  The developers refer to this ‘contract’ for what to do.

Now you have the overhead of paying a local consultant to write this behemoth document.  As a client, you now have to review and sign it this monster document like it was a contract.

Then there is an additional overhead of a local manager being the ‘translator’ between yourself and the offshore developers.

Wouldn’t be just easier to ‘talk’ to the developers and tell them what you want?  

We follow an agile process.  This prioritises a working system that you can provide feedback on rather than reams of documentation.

However, this process relies heavily on good communication.  Ideally, face to face communication.  

This is not possible with offshore development.

Substantially increases risk

Software projects can deliver tremendous value to your business.  They can create such an advantage that your competition becomes irrelevant.

However, they have a significant amount of risk.  Anyone that tells you otherwise is lying.
